BALTIMORE — Coppin State University Ball “An Ode to Black Excellence” on May 2, welcomed more than 500 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and partners to the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront for an evening of elegance, culture, and celebration.

Inspired by the tradition of formal social gatherings and the cultural legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, the black-tie event marked a new chapter in the university’s history following its 125th anniversary. Guests gathered in a setting designed to reflect timeless sophistication, with décor, music, and programming that emphasized connection, pride, and community.

“The Coppin Ball is a celebration of who we are and where we are going,” said Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, president of Coppin State University. “It reflects the excellence of our students, faculty, and staff, the strength of our community, and the power of investing in a future defined by Baltimore’s Hometown University.”

The Ball brought together members of Eagle Nation and supporters from across the region, reinforcing Coppin’s role as a cultural and institutional anchor in Baltimore. The evening also highlighted the university’s continued momentum and the tangible impact of philanthropic investment.

In recent years, Coppin has demonstrated measurable progress tied directly to strategic investment and community support, including:

  • The fastest growing university in Greater Baltimore

  • A 126 percent increase in endowment growth over five years

  • More than $26.7 million raised in support of the university

  • Record student retention, reaching approximately 75 percent

  • Number one among Maryland’s HBCU’s for male engagement growth

  • Expanded academic investments and student success initiatives

“Events like the Coppin Ball are critical to advancing our mission,” Jenkins added. “They create opportunities to invest in student success, elevate faculty innovation, and expand the research and scholarship that define our impact as a university.”

As a formal celebration of Coppin’s mission and impact, the event underscored the importance of continued investment in the university’s future. Support generated through the Ball will help advance student success initiatives, strengthen academic programs, and expand opportunities for the next generation of Coppin scholars.

“This event was intentionally designed to reflect the legacy and future of Coppin,” said Joshua E. Humbert, vice president for institutional advancement. “From the experience in the room to the people it brought together, the Coppin Ball represents what is possible when we celebrate our culture, invest in our students, and build community with purpose.”

With strong attendance and enthusiastic support, the Coppin State University signature events continue to celebrate statewide excellence while deepening the university’s connection to its community and alumni base.
